MANAGING MENTAL HEALTH DURING CORONAVIRUS

Everyone reacts differently to stressful situations, so it’s important to recognize where you’re at and signs that your friends, family and neighbors are having trouble coping. Older people, people with chronic diseases, children and teens, those helping with the COVID-19 response (health care providers, first responders) and those with mental health conditions including substance abuse are at greater risk during this time, but everyone can be affected.

Symptoms to look out for include:

  • Fear and worry about your own health or the health of your loved ones

  • Changes in sleeping patterns, including difficulty sleeping

  • Changes in eating

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Worsening of chronic health problems

  • Increased use of alcohol, tobacco or other substances

More information is available from the CDC below.

self care tips

As best as you are able to, try to fit in some time for self-care:

  • Take a break - read a book, do a puzzle, take a walk

  • Limit how much coverage you watch or read about the outbreak

  • Take deep breaths, stretch, meditate

  • Try to still eat healthy and make sure you are eating regular meals

  • Get outside if you can - take a walk, go down to the beach, ride your bike, or even just go for a ride

  • Connect with others - call a friend, hop on a Zoom call
