CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM

We need a fair and equitable criminal justice system.

Meg will advocate for:

OVERTURNING DISCRIMINATORY PRACTICES

  • Eliminating cash bail that disproportionately impacts lower-income residents and people of color

  • Overturning mandatory minimum sentences for most drug crimes

  • Repealing mandatory life sentences without parole

  • Opposing all efforts to bring back the death penalty

  • Decriminalize minor infractions such as driving without a license

  • Raising the age of criminal majority to 21 and expanding access to treatment and education for offending youth

  • Increase and protect the rights of incarcerated persons to visitations from friends and family members

  • Reinvest savings from lower incarceration into community projects and neighborhoods most affected by high rates of incarceration

RECOGNIZING DRUG ADDICTION AS A PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERN

  • Policies that treat drug addiction as the public health concern it is, and NOT as a criminal justice issue

  • Allocating funds to prioritize treatment over incarceration

SAFE AND FAIR MARIJUANA LAWS

  • Ensuring the state’s marijuana business positively impacts people of color and communities most negatively impacted by the war on drugs

  • Supporting efforts to seek retroactive justice for previous convictions that would no longer be classified as crimes
